how dangerous is this really?
So ive worked hard all winter and saved enough money that i can finally buy the motorcycle I've always wanted. Nothing special just a kawasaki ninja 250. really all i want to do is use it to get back and forth from campus, save a little gas around town, and of course have fun. I dont plan on getting on any highways or interstates and im a very careful and easy going driver. I realize the embedded risk of an open vehicle but always assured myself that as long as i was careful i could minimize the risks to myself. However, even my friends are giving me speech after speech of how i am ASSURED to die if i get my ninja. Is it really quite that dangerous, or is it more of how responsible the driver is? Also i plan on taking a safety and practice course through my college to get my full license before i buy.
Motorcycle riding is as dangerous as you make it. I have 59 years of riding, close to 1/2 million miles, been in about 1/2 the USA, and all over much of Europe. Have had two accidents, neither were my fault, BUT if I had been following the procedures I am about to tell you, would not have had the accident.
1) You must ride very defensively, remember, no one sees you. Therefore, ride defensively, in an OFFENSIVE manner.
Ride like you are as big as any trailer truck, so you can be seen, but be prepared to act like a motorcycle if someone comes into you space.
2) The most dangerous situation you normally experience is when cars pass you, and cut in on you. The safest speed is slightly faster than normal traffic. Slowly pick then off, not them passing you.
3) Always - lights ON ,Eyes on the road, See everything that is, or can get in front of you.
4) Keep the bike and yourself in good condition. Do not ride if over tired.
5) Never ride if the road has ice on it. Also in heavy rain, if possible, not at all in rain. Certainly not with ice or snow.
Any good riding course will cover rules of the road, some may not cover all these items. They do work.
