what kind of helmet do i need for sport motorcycles?
first time rider, still in training. planning to get a ninja 250r. I need a good helmet and gloves and coat.

The big motorcycle magazines--Cycle, Rider, Cycle World, etc--do an article every few years where they buy a variety of helmets and send them to an independent lab for testing, then report on the results. What they find is that all helmets work about the same in terms of impact resistance and abrasion resistance. In fact the best are the cheapest, made of ABS plastic, but it's very heavy. You pay more for comfort and for features you want.
Different manufacturers of helmets make them for different shaped heads. I have a Shoei/KJR head. But it's best to go some place where you can try them on because they are all shaped differently. Some will be much more or less comfortable than others. More expensive helmets are Snell certified (instead of the simpler, required Dept. of Transportation certification), but personally I don't think this buys you more protection.
Not surprisingly, about half of the impacts come from the front. So a Full Face Helmet is much safer. Some people hate them. I love mine.
Different mfgrs make helmets in different sizes. In one you'll be an M, in another you might be L or XL. You just have to try them on.
As for a jacket. You're looking for both warmth and abrasion resistance. Leather used to be king, also because it doesn't flap in the wind. But now there are textile jackets just as good. If you ride where it's hot, you can get a mesh jacket that has the abrasion resistance of leather but the air just goes right through it. I have one of those and it's great.
Gloves just need to have leather palms because if you fall off the bike you reflexively put your hands out to stop yourself. And both the gloves and the sleeves of the jacket have some kind of closure at the wrists to keep them in place. Think of falling flat on the ground, on your stomach, and sliding 20 feet. You don't want your jacket to ride down your arms or your gloves to creep up. Snaps or velcro or zippers on the sleeves are good, and similar on the bottoms of the gloves.
I hope you never fall off your bike, but everyone does, so you dress for it. Usually it's low speed--in a parking lot or something, and not that dangerous. But it's a good reason to buy a used bike to start out on.
