Montana Bike Bicycle

Whats the best type of bicycle for cross country/state?
My mom and I want to ride bikes from our house to my grandma's house in Montana. We were wondering what kind of bike would be best (I mean like recumbent bikes, road bikes, mountain bikes, etc.)
Were planning to go from Washington (state not DC lol) to Columbia Falls, Montana. Or from Washington to Boise, Idaho
P.S. Would you have to have a pace car or a car in front or behind you by law? My mom is wondering lol
A touring bike or a road bike is the best choice. How far are you planning to ride.
No, you don't need a pace car but you will need to plan the route for places to stay and get food and water. You will also need to get in shape for riding that distance. You want to be able to ride 50-70 miles a day with your gear and plan you trip around that.
Start out with maping your route.

Do a Google search for touring by bicycle and start a training program.
