Can I use my horse riding helmet for cycling?
It's comfortable and I think it would be more effective than some of the cheaper bike helmets out there. It looks like the kids bmx helmets. This is a serious post.
Depends upon the lid. The construction of many horse riding helmets will vary. A simple £30 Trolex will have better protection than some £200 lids. (Some hand built show lids actually had the button on the top of the helmet kept in place via a nail which pointed down).
Your main problem is going to be ventilation. If you look at many cycle helmets, especially the ones at £50 +, you will see that a great deal of thought has been given to ventilation and sweat. If you are just leisure riding, this is not an issue, but as soon as you start to heat up, the riding lid will suffer. I know, since I used my riding lid when I started on cycles.
Weight, as stated in other answers, is also an issue. For horse riding, this extra weight can actually be an advantage, since you can steer your horse by simply looking where you are going. The weight of your head is enough to alter your position and turn the horse. Fine. On a bike, if you carry extra weight, you have to move it with your legs.
The helmet that you describe is fine for BMX. I know the style. The problem is that it is a very hot lid. You can use it. It will do the job. But it will not be pleasant.
